Poor. Old. Tired. Horse

Ian Hamilton Finlay’s experimental visual poetry magazine Poor. Old. Tired. Horse (1962–68) is now online.

Ian Hamilton Finlay’s Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. is one of the most important visual poetry magazines internationally. The magazine began to publish an increasing amount of visual poetry starting with issue 5. Finlay (1925-2006) would eventually distance himself from visual poetry in favour of his Wild Hawthorne Press, poetic objects and his monumental Little Sparta.

Borrowing its name from a Robert Creeley poem and published through Finlay’s imprint the Wild Hawthorn Press, Poor. Old. Tired. Horse. (or POTH as it is often referred to) introduced the United Kingdom to poetry from all over the world and to explore the visual presentation of poetry through the use of drawings, woodcuts, calligraphy and typographic design.
